Orang Laut x Crane
In collaboration with Crane, we will be hosting an intimate storytelling session and sharing the cuisine of our family who used to live on Pulau Semakau, one of Singapore’s southern islands that was once home to 600 islanders.
This session will delve deep into our life as an Orang Laut and discuss what Pulau Semakau means to our family, through a sharing session by Firdaus, a descendent of an Orang Laut.
We are inviting you to spend an evening with us over home-cooked food by Mdm Nooraini, a native-born of Semakau. As we welcome the month of Ramadan in April, we are also extending this invitation to our Muslim friends to break their fast with us at Crane.
We look forward to filling your tummies and minds with our love of food and conversation.

Who are we?
More than 40 years ago, the occupants of Pulau Semakau were asked to leave the island. Our family was the last to leave. Today, all of us are scattered across the country, some living nearer to the open waters, with hopes of returning to the place we used to live in.
We are the Orang Laut, or people of the sea. Our family, along with many others depended on the life source that the sea brought about. Our hearts still long for the life we once had. We would often come together to talk about the moments that we know cannot be relived again.
